Hoffman: Spring training lives up to the hype

Spring training lives up to the hype Spring training is a baseball fan's dream vacation. Wins and losses don't matter, and everybody from the starting pitcher to the Rotary Club senior in the parking lot is happy to be in the warm sun with today's game starting at 1:05 p.m. Hardee wore his Brian Bogusevic jersey and waited for the Astros right fielder to get out of a team meeting on nutrition to autograph it. Osceola County Stadium, where the Astros play, is located at the far end of U.S. 192 in Kissimmee. Guys, do NOT buy a hair piece at a flea market. [...] homeowners make a little side money by charging to let you park in their driveway and on their front lawn. Remember when I picked up a 1990 Astros home jersey - No. 54, worn by Randy Hennis - a few months ago at a Minute Maid Park garage sale of souvenirs, authentic used equipment and game-worn jerseys? The Astros' 1990 jerseys were a classic, with rainbow piping down the sleeves and clean blue lettering. In 1990, Hennis, a rookie, pitched 92?3 innings in three games for the Astros after being called up from Tucson in September. After an injury forced him out of the big leagues, he became a pitching coach for the Florida Marlins organization. Hennis agreed to be my kid's phone-a-coach, to talk regularly about pitching and the mental approach to baseball.

49ers add Manningham, Ginn to receiving corps

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Ted Ginn Jr. could only watch the NFC championship with a bum knee, seeing Mario Manningham catch a key touchdown pass for the New York Giants and his replacement punt returner for San Francisco botch two returns that ultimately led to the 49ers' loss. The 49ers signed Ginn to a one-year deal Thursday hours after officially announcing the addition of Manningham with a two-year contract. Williams and Ginn are part of a much-improved group of receivers from the unit last season that had only player, Crabtree, catch more than 20 passes in the regular season. Manningham agreed to the deal last Saturday when the 49ers were in the thick of the race to sign Peyton Manning, the four-time NFL MVP and older brother of Manningham's former quarterback with the Giants ? two-time Super Bowl winner Eli Manning. The 49ers' defense was one of the best last season and played a big part in the team's 13-3 record and trip to the NFC title game. Manningham has 160 catches for 2,315 yards and 18 touchdowns in his four-year career after being drafted out of Michigan in the third round in 2008. Manningham took off in the postseason, catching TD passes in wins over Atlanta and Green Bay to get New York to the NFC title game. Having played the Niners in both the regular season and playoffs this past season, Manningham knows how good San Francisco is on defense.

"I'm Getting Arrested" App for Immigrants

shutterstock_arrested.jpgArizona's passage of SB 1070, a law that made it a crime to be an undocumented immigrant, has heightened the state's culture of fear, especially among immigrants. A Department of Justice investigation into racial profiling of Latinos by Maricopa County Sheriff's Office found that Latinos are now four to nine times as likely to be stopped in traffic than non-Latinos. Often times, pre- and now post-SBN 1070, immigrant rights activists have heard complaints that family members detained would disappear without notice. App developers are trying to fix that with "eAPP," the Emergency Alert and Personal Protection App.

Sponsor

The New American Media's Valeria Fernandez writes that this app will "allow users to notify family, friends, attorneys and even their consulate when they get pulled over by law enforcement or when they are facing an emergency situation that puts their safety or civil rights at risk." Not only will the app send a pre-set list of people information about the user's location, it also records the date and time of the incident and can record audio or video. It can also store that data in a Web interface.

The app also informs the user of their civil rights if they are arrested. It could provide assistance in that moment of decision-making, and help immigrant advocates search for undocumented immigrants who have disappeared into the detention system.

eAPP is currently in development. Take a look at it here.
