Running notebook: Cancer only inspires survivor to dream bigger

NASA scientist Lisa Danielson remembers the exact day she began running: [...] she joined a couch-to-5K training program, shed 25 pounds and completed her first 3.1-mile race in May of that year. A year later, she had lost 32 more pounds, finished a 13.1-mile race, and was contemplating running a marathon to celebrate her 40th birthday. The $3 billion initiative, announced earlier this year, aims to dramatically reduce the death rates of eight common and difficult cancers, including triple-negative breast cancer. "Lisa is the best kind of crazy, and whether we're running or not, we're all along for the ride," said David Hoberman, a friend who will travel from Boston to run with Danielson. "What started out as means to lose weight became an integral part of her recovery from breast cancer, and the fact that she has continued to increase her running distance is nothing short of amazing and inspiring," he said.
