Police shut down and board up St Paul's Shady Grove Cafe

POLICE say they have won their battle to shut down for good a St Paul's cafe they say was an illegal drinking den linked with violence and anti-social behaviour.
The Shady Grove Café in Ashley Road has been temporarily shut twice in the past but an Avon and Somerset police Anti-Social Behaviour team went before Bristol Magistrates Courts using a law they say had never been used before to get the property permanently closed to the public.
A further three-month closure order give police the power to board up the property immediately after today's hearing. After it lapses, the owners will be able to enter but members of the public will be banned from the property indefinitely, to stop it reopening as an unlicensed bar.
Police said neighbours had regularly complained of all-night noise, often lasting until 7am, violence and anti-social behaviour.
Claims had also been made about drug dealing at the property, officers said.

Senior police anti-social behaviour coordinator Alex Quayle said: "There have been numerous incidents of violence and anti-social behaviour connected to this property and this activity was understandably making the lives of neighbours completely miserable.

"We are delighted with the court's decision today to close this venue to the public indefinitely. This will mean that long-suffering neighbours will finally get a permanent resolution to the problems they have been facing for so many years.

"We wouldn't have been able to gain this closure without the continued help and support of the local community. We want to thank them for their patience over the years and hope that this result will give confidence to anyone who is suffering with anti-social behaviour at the hands of their neighbours. We can do something to stop it if we work together."

To report anti-social behaviour, call the police on 101.
