Joan Stubbs, a 49-year-old black woman, was stabbed to death Saturday, April 28, in the 1100 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Officers responded to an "unknown trouble" call at an apartment about 12:30 p.m., according to a Long Beach Police Department news release.
When authorities arrived, they found Stubbs on the floor of a bedroom with several stab wounds to her body. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim's roommate told police she discovered Stubbs injured and the alleged assailant was locked in a bathroom.
At some point, the suspect came out of the bathroom with several self-inflicted stab wounds. He was taken to a hospital for treatment where he remains in critical condition. Officials said will be booked on suspicion of murder pending his release from the hospital.
During the investigation, detectives learned Stubbs and the man had a dating relationship. The assailant had been living at the apartment with her.
A motive for the killing remains unknown.
