Missouri City man indicted over bald eagle

VICTORIA – A Missouri City man has been indicted by a federal grand jury, accused of illegally possessing a bald eagle, federal prosecutors said on Thursday. The indictment returned in Victoria accuses Sam Mathew, 53, of possessing a migratory nongame bird, a bald eagle, in violation of The Migratory Bird Treaty Act, U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson said in a news release. The law provides protection for migratory birds. Mathew is expected to surrender to federal authorities and make an initial appearance before a U.S. magistrate judge soon. If convicted, Mathew faces a possible $15,000 fine and/or a six-month term in federal prison.
