Future is uncertain for 1930s building

Several people who attended a forum regarding possible uses for the former Rosenberg City Hall were disappointed, and even angry, to find a walk-around format, rather than a meeting with the opportunity to formally address City Council. The May 17 forum at the city's Civic Center featured artist renderings, photos and a sample floor plan of a possible scenario for building use. Located at Fourth Street and Avenue H, in Rosenberg's historic downtown, the facility was built in 1930 and has housed City Hall, the police and fire departments, and businesses throughout the years. [...] if council and the Rosenberg Development Corp. opt to move forward with design and construction, the cost will be 6 percent of projected construction costs, with up to $10,000 for additional expenses. Bill Knesek, president of the RDC board of directors, and Matt Fielder, city economic development director, said no commitments have been made to the project. Dan Ives, former Lamar CISD superintendent and longtime Rosenberg resident, said the school district faced the same type of "tough decision" in the mid-'90s regarding Robert E. Lee Elementary because of asbestos in a portion of the campus, and opted for demolition.
