In one of the Rev. Steve Martin's photos of east Jerusalem, a stack of watermelons - ripe, striped, green - sits just a few yards from the 30-foot concrete wall the state of Israel has erected to separate itself from its Palestinian neighbors. Together, the wall and the melons provide a symbol of sorts, of both the wounds and the aspirations of the Jewish and Palestinian people living in the region. Martin is a pastor, photographer and filmmaker who uses visual media to communicate challenging, prophetic messages of social justice. Martin says that film and photography create a powerful challenge to people that most pastors simply cannot match through regular sermons and church work. Because of this radical separation, Israelis never have to encounter these people if they don't want to.
